Even our befuddled president knows that there is something wrong with switching the clocks twice a year. But he’s confused. He wants to get rid of daylight savings time, when the result we should be looking for is to make it permanent. That would avoid this early darkness that is such a problem. Even though DJT is backwards, he will stubbornly stick to his guns and we’ll all be f*d.
I had no idea about the history behind DST. But the whole concept has me flat-footed. Every single time it hits, I’m taken by surprise, especially now that my clock is a smartphone that updates the time without telling me.
You did the right thing, Henny. Listen to your body. If it says sleep, then that’s what you do. In the fall I get an energy depletion but when it gets cold and snow flies I sorta perk up. January is usually high energy. I love post-holidays. 🥳
Nice article or column or whatever you like to call it, Henny. I really enjoyed it!
I had no idea that you’d had brain tumors in your medical history. It’s always something, right? It’s awesome that you overcame them. My mom had a tumor in her lung (non-smoker) and she’s still going strong with about 3/4 of one lung remaining.
I really need to work on my planned second Substack about how I have nearly everything medically. It’s a pretty impressive list.
As for the time change, I’ve always kind of liked it. I too crave stormy weather and darkness. My eyes are fairly sensitive to light, so that may be part of it, but I’ve always loved the dark.* Sometimes it feels like I’m drawing power from it. It’s the same with strong winds.
* I was scared of the dark for a long time, but that’s just because my uncle and dad were immature jerks when we were little and thought it was hilarious to constantly terrify us.
My uncle is also the reason I still have a problem with heights. When I was very young (but old enough to remember it), he hung me headfirst over the side of the Space Needle. I clearly remember seeing a small pool with a fountain near the base and thinking, “If I somehow land in there I might not die.”
You know I kinda long for a cluster fuck time situation if it meant we just kinda mosey around from one thing to the next and not: this, then this, and this. Yeah flying would be torture! I’m not a stranger to reg depression, but SAD has never impacted me. In fact, it feels like my body craves the darkness of the year. Must be epigenetic memory from my Norwegian ancestors living in dark coldness hahahaha
Yeah it’s no bueno for me. Worse now that I’m not so fixated on work.
One thing I almost mentioned in the piece also was how where you live in a particular time zone plays a role as well. We are on the eastern edge of Central Time, so get considerably less daylight than those on the western edge.

Ha! I honestly don’t care one way or the other (darker in mornings or evenings)….I wish we’d just pick one and stick to it!
Another senseless war-related incident. Also, thanks for sharing the “Stevie” sample, Henny.
Gosh darn wars

I hadn’t really thought about that Lee. In the past you at least could recalibrate by resetting them all before you fell asleep, or the next morning.
Now it’s just, poof. Gone.

Dude I think that now makes three of you that read this and are that way. Crazy. I didn’t even know that was possible!
So you’re saying we’re heading into Mike season huh? Everything’s coming up Millhouse!
Eggactly

Ah, good times. Good times.
OMG the space needle?!?! I think I would’ve shat myself. I don’t like heights as it is, that woulda probably made me mental.
Mental? I resemble that remark.
🤣

Holy shit that’s deep. Never dawned on me that it could work the other way around.
Henny I absolutely loathe the time change bs. It always messes with me.
I always get a little down in the winter also. Sometimes it gets bad. It used to be real bad when I was younger.
