It's a bummer, and yet I also feel sorry for our kids. A mix of both. And also loved the Great Lakes talk (was born and spent childhood in Michigan). Thanks again for the insights!
As far as not calling out bullshit when bullshit is happening, some countries are far worse. Last weekend I was on a public bus ride and had to watch this PSA on a loop about how we should control our rage because it affects others. The premise seemed to be that no matter what the circumstances, rage is always the fault of the person expressing it.
And speaking of Gen Z, one of my disheartening experiences as a teacher was that it's no longer students' responsibility to do their best the first time. Rather, they're entitled to ask the teacher how they can raise their grade and get as many re-dos as they need. 🙄
Great stuff as usual! Tying many topics together, the late British jockey Dick Francis wrote dozens of thrilling mysteries from the 60s to the 2000s centered around horse racing. You don’t need to know anything about horses to enjoy them. But you’ll learn a ton. He weaved in well researched plot points from unrelated areas, like hot air balloons, taxi mafias, charity scams, and wine wholesaling, so I always walk away from his novels entertained and more knowledgeable than when I began. He remade himself with a career change, and so so many of his characters.
Agree on hockey being the best team sport to watch live. Gap between hockey on TV and live is massive. That said, combat sports is another level. Boxing, MMA ringside… insane energy.
