Hey Henny…I’m not sure what kind of book you are writing, but have you considered self-publishing? I went to a writing workshop in Philly, pitched my book to an agent, learned a lot, and ultimately decided self-publishing was the best route for me. Happy to share what I learned with you.
If you take Angie up on this offer you could bring 30 copies of your self-published book with you on every flight and take advantage of the sales constraints of a captive audience and walk down the aisle selling your book to everyone who forgot that's a thing that people used to do on planes. That way you don't need a bigger audience, you just need a smaller one that can't escape.
I thoroughly enjoyed this, Henny. And I pretended to be working (from my wife's viewpoint) while reading it. But I also do have to call you out: Epstein's first book was The Sports Gene. If you haven't read that one, and knowing you a bit now, I promise you'll love it.
Man, I’ve read Range five-six times, at least, lol. But I’ll be honest, I got stuck half-way through Inside The Box and still have yet to get back to it. I think I needed more sports examples to hold my interest, lol. Both my sons read it though, I suppose I can lean on them for the cliff notes, haha
Yeah that’s honestly what I think held my attention so much, just all of the football thinking I was doing as I was reading it. And also this writing thing…we’ve got a ton of constraints stacked up against us.
Ahhh Henny, this was fun. I did not remember Seth by name but your recap and the image helped. I remember Kenny Rogers Roasters. That place wasn’t bad. Was like a Boston Market for the rest of the country who didn’t want to say they ate at a place with “Boston” in the name. The Family Man is such an underrated movie. 25 years later, I still can’t believe Brett Ratner directed it.

I didn’t realize he directed that! That movie hit right about the time I was deciding what type of life I wanted to lead. So it’ll always be special for me.
I too am an artifact of the monoculture. I used the phrase "Don't get all bunged up man" recently and young folks around me thought I was having a stroke.
I am coaching teenagers currently and at least once a day I say something that gets only blank stares in response. Then I’m like, oh yeah, they have no clue what that means.
And I subscribe to so many people and I neverrrrr get any Substack emails beyond the new subscriber alerts or the confirmations I get subscribing to others. It’s so weird. So, it makes sense to me that your open rates are lower. But luckily enough, you’re always in my feed.

Thanks Angie! For a variety of reasons that’s not the best avenue for this particular project. But I’m not ruling it out in the future!
Where in Philly was your workshop?
Downtown, at the convention center. In 2023. It travels around the country, I think.
