Travis extended a challenge at the end of the podcast, inviting a list of three positive things about New Jersey - I accept: Let’s see, there’s Bruce Springsteen, and umm. . .can I do Kansas instead?

Differentiated topography (can go mountains to seashore relatively quickly)

Pizza, bagels, sloppy joes (which are not tomato sauce based) and apple-picking, peach picking, and tomato-picking farms (and vineyards)

View of NYC skyline (instead of paying NYC prices for a view of Jersey)

My list of grievances is far longer, but The Garden State does have some merit.

Whoa. You blew my mind with Sloppy Joes sans tomato based sauce. How???

It’s a triple decker sandwich with cole slaw on it in NJ. Everywhere else, it’s ground meat with sweet tomato sauce.

🤷‍♀️

I don’t make the rules.

As far as gerrymandering, I used to live in a quite competitive congressional district in Arizona. It wasn't as exciting as one might guess. The candidates seemed more preoccupied with pleasing the center than with standing up for their principles.

P.S. Thanks for the clarification, Henny. A number of specific exercises give me low back pain now, and I suspect it's because I didn't use proper form when I was younger.

Yeah I learned how poorly I lifted things a few years ago. I had a really bad car accident and wound up in PT and OT for a spell. It has helped a lot.

Moorea Maguire's avatar

Oh no! Glad you survived the car accident. So the PT and OT helped a lot and taught you how to properly lift weights?

Henny Hiemenz's avatar

Yeah it helped a lot. I think not so much for the lifting weights, because I had basically done that my whole life. But more with the everyday stuff. I didn’t focus on that like I did lifting.

Stupid stuff like laundry, and dishes, and just general around the house things. It also taught me how to engage my core doing those things. Which has helped a ton.

I think I know what you mean. It's so easy to forget to engage my abs when doing housework and everyday movements.

My kid has been fighting fires for the last 2 summers. They go to some huge fires. It's a little scary when he sends back these videos of just raging infernos.

Oh man I bet. That is one hellova summer job!!!!

He gets so much overtime and he loves that money. The work is insanely hard. But he was a wrestler since 4th grade, so he's in that kind of shape.

He's gonna pay for it when he gets older though.

Maybe. But ya gotta respect somebody that gets after it!

I was a PE major and had to take a bunch of sport classes to learn how to teach them. One was wrestling. Me, one other student, the wrestling coach, and one of his athletes….that was the entire class. Holy shit was that hard!!!
