You have lost your way, young son!! Wawa rocks!! Miller is ok and the only thing better about your ballpark is that he has a roof. How about I send you a scrapple sandwich
OMG no, you are a scrapple lover? You may be the first non-Philadelphian that I’ve ever met that knew what it was, let alone liked it. If you aren’t aware yet what it is made of, don’t google it.
Just look at it as the “flatbread” of hotdogs, Henny. 😂 My dad was from Baltimore. Every time we visited his sister’s family (from NJ where I grew up), she served it with pancakes. I loved it. But you also probably didn’t know I ate liverwurst sandwiches with only mustard on white bread everyday as a kid. Hated PBJ. Wouldn’t eat it. So I was a weird kid. Still a weirdo, I’m sure of it. 😬
We went the other way - my wife and I grew up in Chicago and moved to Philly for six years. Philly is where I learned to talk over people - Midwesterners don’t do that. We loved Wawa, Rita’s, Jim’s Steaks, and many things Philly. By the way, suggesting that fish fries on Friday nights might be a religious experience has validity - a certain religion endorsed that strategy - although I don’t know how many Catholics live in Wisconsin.
Yes Bill, lots of Catholics. The funny thing is I was raised Catholic and only remember the no meat on Friday thing happening during Lent. But it seems as though it’s a year round thing I guess.
I’ve sadly never been to the states but Wisconsin sounds up my street (and not too dissimilar to where I live tbh) Sport, beer, outdoorsy, sometimes freezing - can’t go wrong!
Omg, this is hilarious!! 😂 I learned a lot about WI…like fish fries and old fashioneds made with Korbel. TBH, sounds a lot like Ireland 😂 (cold, fish and chips, and hot toddies). Huge fan of Philly though. One of my favorite cities. This was enjoyable to read, Henny. Loved it! ❤️
Hahaha--entertaining read, or should I say listen. This is the first time I've used the audio on a post and it worked out great to be able to listen and laugh while having to do something else. I learned a few things about my Midwestern neighbor Wisconsin, which I have always associated with beer and cheese (and more recently, Charlie Berens). I had no idea about the Korbel Old Fashioned--sounds horrible. (Confirmed by your footnote.) And the fish fry actually IS a religious experience. All those German and Polish settlers brought with them the Catholic tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays; fish was considered an acceptable alternative. As a Johnny-come-lately Catholic by marriage many years ago, I was worried about fitting in with my ex-mother-in-law on this until someone pointed out that her brother, a priest, was stuffing his face with shaved ham. I never worried about it after that.
Holy cow I found that, amazing! And that is definitely not my voice 🤣. I don’t know how that happened but it’s very cool. I’m going to have to keep my eye on that for other posts. Thanks for pointing it out!
I saw that you can actually choose to do a voice note and record your own, but I had no idea they were adding in AI voices or whoever that is reading your post!
Ah yes, Catholics. They know how to ruin everything 🤣(I was raised catholic). I am so new to Substack I don’t even know what you are talking about regarding the audio part. How’s that work?
When your post popped up in my feed, it had a “play” button (see below), which I pressed to see what it would do, and voila! It did an audio of your post. I am even newer than you, so I assumed it was you who had narrated it! Now I’m curious if this is a feature on all Substack posts?
Well, crap. I thought I’d posted a screenshot, but apparently that doesn’t work. There was a right-facing arrow in the upper right corner of your post when I opened it in the app.
Buffalo is really a Midwest town, so much more like Wisconsin than Philly. Right down to the ubiquitous fish fries. Love your point about winter—it’s the length.
You just ripped on Philly…out loud?!?! You’ve got some serious nerve…or you know no one from Philly, Henny!
God be with you. CBP is amazing…love going to the park to see a game. The Lincoln is also pretty awesome. I’ll just leave it at that…and wait to see if any true haters come at you later. 🤣

Scrapple = 🤮
Noooooo….scrapple is delish! 😎

Liverwurst?!? Next thing you’ll be telling me you at anchovies out of a can 🤣
😂

Enjoyed this, Henny.

Thanks Andy!! I’ve been to your neck of the woods and agree with the comparison. Hadn’t put that together yet though, thanks for sharing!

Thanks Jenn! Definitely a lot like Ireland, and I actually have a bit coming about that - very prescient!
I was actually eating fish as I read this. Alas, it was not fried.
Haha! Probably tasted better.
Isn’t everything south of Chicago basically southern Illinois? ;)
Ah, spoken like a true Chicagoan 😉
Booze warms the body. Maybe that’s why there are so many bars? Hope you’re staying warm— with or without booze.

Did you try to post a picture with that comment Julie? It sounds like it but I can’t see it.

Sounds like my kinda place. I live an Old Fashioned, but made with brandy? That's original.
Yes, originally shitty!! 🤣

And you typically get much more snow than us 🤮

Glad you liked it William!!
